[summary] => Over the last two months I have been doing an Art of Exchange ceramic and stencil workshop at the 1st Street Gallery in Claremont. 1st Street is an art center and gallery for adults with mental and developmental disabilities. On October 2nd from 6-8pm the gallery will be exhibiting the work we have created together. I know it is a bit of a trek from LA, but the place and the people are so inspiring. If you have the time and can make it, I would love to see you there. If not, we will be showing the work from the show at Heath Ceramics Los Angeles in January....

[summary] => Normal 0 0 1 876 4998 41 9 6137 11.1282 0 0 0 Introducing Melcher Media: The Impresario of Pop-up Books   New York, NY, August 10, 2009--Once exclusive to the realm of youngsters, the pop-up book is no longer child's play. Award-winning content producer and book packager Melcher Media has mastered the art of the movable book for adults by tapping into our longing for the fantastical object and giving it a modern-day edge. With the forthcoming October 2009 release of Wicked The Musical: A Pop-Up Compendium of Splendiferous Delight and Thrillifying Intrigue, based on the smash-hit, record-breaking, Tony Award-winning musical, the Melcher Media pop-up books have accessed our love for analog in an increasingly digital world. "If books are going to compete with digital media they need to rediscover their physical presence," observes Charles Melcher, founder and publisher of Melcher Media. "Pop-up books create an experience that you can't replicate on the screen. They are truly physical objects--they are made by hand, made by craftspeople, made the old fashioned way. There is a physical chain from the maker to the user, which is lost in our digital age, and in many ways, is even more relevant now." Melcher is reliving his childhood, in more ways than one. Growing up with dyslexia, Melcher's impassioned parents brought him reading materials of all kinds--from pop-up books to comic books. "Books were always an interactive, multi-sensorial experience. I would hear, speak,...

Incredibly, Destiny Street Repaired features rescued rhythm tracks from the 1982 sessions along with brand new vocals by Richard and extraordinary new lead guitar parts from three legendary players: Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell and original Voidoid Ivan Julian. Destiny Street Repaired has been a project nearly thirty years in the making, a challenging, but ultimately thrilling rescue of what should have been the great second Richard Hell and the Voidoids album. "Destiny Street Repaired better represents the intentions of the original 1982 sessions than does the 'Destiny Street' that was released that year," according to Richard.   Though it produced some of his best known songs, Richard Hell was dispirited by the ultimate recording of 1982's Destiny Street. "At the time of the original recording I was so debilitated by despair and drug-need that I was useless. The record ended up being a high-pitched sludge of guitar...

The palette is romantic soft colour.  Soft and gentle pink, with fresh and subtle accents of Blue, coral and nude tones.  Leaving a soft natural romantic feminine look, with a natural blush on the lips. [summary] => It's always exciting to find a thriving artistic business run by a woman, one such place is Art and Soul Tattoos. Erika Stanley has been tattoing since 1993 and established Art and Soul Tattoo in 1996. Their myspace page has a ton of inspiring shots of her work and the other artists at the shop like Adam Kilss (who makes killer paintings too), Joby Cummings, Danny Chan, and Scott Stollar, as well as other international guests like Malika Rose and Jake Fraser. Their location, on Robertson south of Pico, always gets a weird reaction, but it's actually a cool little stretch with small local neighborhood oriented businesses, way different than the Kitson and Ivy vibe a few miles up the same street (hurl!). Erika's work spans from Japanese to traditional American, but I'm especially blown away by her pin-ups and animal portraits. Erika in the new location, mid-move. Jake Fraser tattoing my tour manager Ed in the background! Here's the info in case you can't get it off their myspace page, 2600 S Robertson Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90034 (310) 202-7203There's one on Ft. Meyers too, so don't be fooled!Oh and did I mention that they have team spirit too? These are some of their bowling trophies on display at their new location freshly opened on the corner of Robertson, just two doors down from their old shop. Striiiike!!!...

[title] => Performance Rights Act: Fair Play for Air Play
[summary] => I just got back to CA from DC where a great organization called musicFIRST brought out over 100 figures from the music industry including my band The Donnas (and Suzanne Vega!!) to lobby on The Hill for performance rights. Trolling the government tunnels: Basically in US, broadcast radio (AM and FM) only pays royalties to song publishers, not performers/rights holders. Now, doesn't seem like that big of a deal when Britney Spears doesn't get paid and her songwriters do, because she is making lots of money from many other sources, but it is her right to collect a fair portion on revenue that she generates with her performance, and it does matter financially to smaller musicians especially talented and overlooked studio musicians, who depend on every source of income combined to pay rent and bills. This is also a fairness issue because all other forms of radio, including internet and satellite, pay performance rights while broadcast radio refuses to update its' policies. The US doesn't pay these royalties to foreign artists either, so most other countries have a ban preventing US artists from collecting international royalties. Radio opposes this vehemently saying the promotion value of airplay helps the performers/labels enough, but as I always say "my landlord doesn't accept exposure units!" Congresswoman Diane Watson (33rd district, including my very own neighborhood: Los Feliz) said she's in favor of the bill which will see it's next hearing on Mar 12. musicFIRST's...

Sure, sometimes I find myself wishing I could live inside a Woody Allen film from the 70's. But, let's face it: I was only six when the decade ended. The truth is...I just wanted to slap you with a bold, semi-controversial title. Where the enjoyment of the music becomes a visceral experience as much, or if not more than, a heady one.    When I listen to Gaby Hernandez's debut album "When Love," I am transported into a calm, reflective, hopeful state where - as one of my favorite songs on the album is titled -  love will find the way. It's not an album that examines love in its initial form. It is a celebration of love, a very self-reflective, longing, secure, matured, and eternal love.   Hernandez has spent years...

Besides the big celebs Japan also has a tendency to randomly pick (no offense to anyone) slightly less well known people, like let's say, French singer Alizee for a cookie ad, or recently, Emmy Rossum for Mt.Rainier Caffe Latte. Probably inspired by Scarlett Johansson's horrible Starbucks commercial (sorry I could not find it), Mt.Rainier decided to find itself a star as well and ended up with Emmy. [summary] => I first saw Wes Lang's work at the Scope art fair in Miami Basel a few years ago.  His epic drawings of the Civil War peeked my interest as I too was working with early Americana.  I loved the work but alas all pieces were  sold.Lang's September 07 show at Deitch Projects was slightly controversial.  Jeffrey Deitch removed two pieces, deemed offensive, after complaints from friends. His current exhibition "Are You Ready For The Country?" although racy, will offend few. My mother being one of them, who will shield her eyes at the mere mention of a topless woman. The exhibition runs through June 21st.http://www.ziehersmith.com/...
